No need to read this edition of GAP Mag- azine in front of the fireplace. We decided to warm your golf hearts and to tantalize your
golf game with GAP’s ULTIMATE 18. What
does that mean exactly?
Think 18 holes of bliss. The caveat: each
hole selected must match its current numer-
ical routing (i.e. Merion’s first hole is No. 1 on
this list). Here are a couple more ground rules.
• each GAP Member Club is eligible for
only one hole
• criteria include beauty, challenge, dis-
tinctiveness, historical significance and
A committee of 12, comprised of individ-
uals with varying golf backgrounds, gathered
frequently throughout 2019 to determine
GAP’s ULTIMATE 18. Translation: lots of
passionate conversation amongst passionate
golf folk. The process, all told, was more than
two years in the making.
We expect a difference of opinion awaits.
However, be aware that this committee took
its responsibility seriously. Each selection
is filled with heartfelt emotion. As this list
materialized, all types of regions and all types
of facilities found space.
GAP’s ULTIMATE 18 includes a hole from
each of the four founding Member Clubs,
two holes from public courses and a Pine
Valley Golf Club appearance. On the architect
scoreboard, William Flynn tops the list being
credited with four designs. Donald Ross is
next with three. The courses on the list represent a mix of classic and modern architecture. Par is 73 ( 36-37). Uncommon we know.
The Philadelphia Golfer newspaper
regularly published a “Great 18” back in
the day — the last time being two decades
ago. GAP expanded its Member Club roster
by more than 100 percent since. Although
Philadelphia Golfer selection criteria was a
bit different, three holes hold staying power:
No. 5 at Pine Valley, No. 6 (formerly No. 9) at
Philadelphia Cricket Club (Wissahickon) and
No. 17 at Philadelphia Country Club. In total,
nine clubs that fancied Philadelphia Golfer
fielded selections for this iteration.
We’re confident this isn’t a one-hit wonder.
There is already talk of future 18s with a twist
(e.g. Public 18, Classic 18, Modern 18).
Behold GAP Magazine’s first attempt at
the ULTIMATE water cooler topic. Please be
gentle when throwing heat our way.
