His legacy will be one remembered for
the long haul, and the portfolio proves that.
However, Mattare says his biggest accomplishment came at home. With unrelenting support
from his wife, Mattare never had to sacrifice
what was most important to him: family time.
He never missed an important golf match or
school event. He never missed a GAP victory
by his son, Matt, who was named the 2017
William Hyndman, III Player of the Year.
“Golf has meant so much to our relation-
ship. My entire golf career is owed to him,”
said Matt, who finished runner-up in this year’s
POY standings. “He has had a golf club in my
hand since I could walk, and I can’t thank him
enough for all he’s done. For every bit proud
That appreciation was on full display during
a weekend consisting of celebration and sur-
prise. On Oct. 26, a secret dinner of 50 close
family and friends was successfully executed
by the club. Mattare, known for having “eyes
on every corner of the grounds,” was in the
dark for all of it.
“The weeks leading up to the event were
incredibly stressful. You wouldn’t believe how
difficult it was to plan a surprise for someone
who knows literally everything going on at the
club. To have been able to pull that off made
everything even more special,” said Matt.
The following night, nearly 300 friends,
family and both present and former colleagues
gathered. Guest speakers paid tribute to
Saucon’s long-time leader. Mattare’s portrait
plaque, set to be placed near the pro shop,
was unveiled. A career worth of memories
circulated around the ballroom’s tables.
“It was a weekend I’ll never forget. I wasn’t
sure whether 50 people were going to be in
attendance or hundreds, so to have such a
great turnout was eye opening. All of the famil-
iar faces reminded me of the journey I’ve taken
to get to where I am today,” said an emotional
Mattare, taking a long look around his office
once again. “It’s been a good run.”
The celebrated leader says his final walk
out will include more tears of joy, but leave no
room for doubt: Saucon will forever remain
Mattare’s home away from home. m
Saucon Valley Country Club has
been Mattare’s home since 1991.
