NESTLED IN THE BACK OF SAUCON VALLEY
Country Club’s quaint, rustic pro shop sits an
office clad in memories and memorabilia.
It’s been an endearing home to Gene Mattare,
Saucon’s General Manager and Director of
Golf, for 28 years and running. This December,
Mattare will pull down the hundreds of photos
and relics as he ends his legacy at the helm of
Saucon’s operations.
“I haven’t even thought about what it’s
going to be like when I walk out of here at the
end of the year,” said Mattare as he glances
around his personal gallery. “It’s going to be
difficult. This – the walls of this office – have
been my home for 28 years now. But I know
it’s time.”
Saucon’s familiar face quickly evolved into
a widely-respected one in the Philadelphia
region over that time period. He’s given much
back to the game and raised a golf-loving
family, including a GAP Major Champion, along
the way. When approached whether or not
he’d like to extend his contract through the
2022 U.S. Senior Open Championship by the
club, which Saucon will host, Mattare knew his
last year would be the 2018 season.
