The Fuga Challenge, formerly known as the Overbrook
Challenge, will take place May 13 with an 8: 30 a.m.
shotgun start. It is an 18-hole stroke play event.
“We decided it would make sense to change the name.
We left the challenge because it was important from
the standpoint that Chris obviously fought the ultimate
challenge,” Chris Lange, Jr., an Overbrook member
who serves on the tournament’s committee, said.
“Chris won it last year with a 66. Obviously, he had a
great run in the [BMW] Philadelphia Amateur, fighting
fatigue and not knowing it was really his cancer that
was coming back. I can’t pretend that any of us knew
him as well as we would have liked. He was only with
the club for such a short period. He was liked and re-
spected by all, though.”
Lange’s father, Chris, Sr., conceived The Overbrook Chal-
lenge 20-plus years ago as a way to challenge the city’s
top amateurs. That will remain the case moving forward.
“We sent personal emails to all of the best players to
make sure we have a good field to honor Chris in the
right way,” Lange, Jr., 31, of Newtown Square, Pa., said.
“He deserves to be remembered. He faced his first bout
with cancer at such a tender age and he beat it with a
smile on his face and a perspective that was wise be-
yond his years. So the tournament is no longer just about
Overbrook challenging the other good players from the
Golf Association of Philadelphia. The tournament now
means much more than that.”
In May 2014, doctors diagnosed Fuga with acute my-
eloid leukemia. Three months later, he received the
necessary bone marrow transplant and embarked on
a road to recovery. He gradually regained his strength,
returned to the golf course and gained Overbrook mem-
bership in 2015. In the aforementioned BMW Philadel-
phia Amateur Championship, Fuga advanced to the
semifinals, where he fell to eventual champion Cole
Berman of Philadelphia Cricket Club, 2&1.
