It’s “All in the Family” for Sandy Run’s
Women’s Club Championship
When Michele Gavaghan won the Women’s Club Championship
at Sandy Run Country Club this summer, it marked her 11th time holding
the crown.
For Gavaghan, that meant surpassing the mark of her mother, Carol
Gallagher, who won 10 club championships at Sandy Run. Next in line
would be her great-aunt, Edith Genesio, who held the title some 15 times.
If there is one thing the women in this family know how to do, it is to win
club championships. In the past 58 years, a member of the Genesio lineage has
claimed the SRCC trophy 38 times.
Since Tony Genesio and his wife Ann joined as family members in the late-
40s, a Genesio has been part
of Sandy Run. And since
their daughter, Carol, won
the first of the family’s
Women’s Club Championships as a 15-year-old in
1953, the name and the title
have been synonymous.
“I got into the game be-
cause of my father,” said
Carol Gallagher, who won
her 10 titles between 1953
and 1986 before becoming
an LPGA teaching profes-
sional in 1994, a position she
held for a decade. “Both my
mom and I took up the game
at the same time.”
Ann’s sister-in-law, Edith, who came to Sandy Run when her husband,
Gene, joined the club a year after his brother Tony, won her first club cham-
pionship in 1960, her 15th in 1982. Ann Genesio won the crown in 1955 and
1959 while Gavaghan’s first title came in 1987.
Ann Genesio, Gallagher and Gavaghan each have also held the Women’s
Club Championship at Lu Lu Country Club, while Gallagher won the title at
Atlantic City Country Club five times, giving her the overall club championships
lead. But at Sandy Run, she is now third in her family in a competition that
could get intense at times.
“I have been at Sandy Run my entire life,” Gavaghan said. “I’ve always been
playing golf, it seems.
“I didn’t realize I was now one up on my mom.”
The Genesio name is not just limited to club championships, as a member
of the family has won the Mater et Filia (Mother-Daughter) six times, the
Powell Cup five times, the Boyle Cup, Dixon Cup and Effie Derr Robey Cup.
Plus, both Ann and Carol played when Sandy Run won the Philadelphia Cup
back in 1980.
Ann Genesio died in 2002. Edith is now 95 and living in Florida.
Carol and Michele still play golf, while Carol, as a doting grandmother,
helps Michele’s three children to improve their game. Yes, there is a fourth
generation female golfer in the family in 12-year-old Cassidy Gavaghan.
Someday, maybe she will be chasing her mother’s mark.

of themselves with Ann Genesio.
